Every time I introduce myself as a #swimteacher, I hear the very similar short story of someone who was just thrown into a deep water by his parent, uncle or some other undefined adult, typically male - I must admit I've never heard of any female figures throwing their kids into water but I've met women who claimed to be the ones thrown in themselves.
As the story goes, of course the baby had naturally swum to safety on its own and is now proudly standing in front of me as a fully-grown adult making a living proof that #swimteacher is a useless profession indeed. I am sure you’ve also heard similar stories and maybe you have been proudly telling one of those yourself. In either case, by all means I beg you avoid throwing any small children into deep water. If #swimming was a natural ability there wouldn’t be any #drownings!
On the contrary, “Drowning remains the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages one to four,” said Ann Marie Buerkle, Acting Chairman, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in a statement made on 9/19/2018
Children #drown because they fall into water and they can’t #swim. They can’t hold their breath underwater and instead they try to gasp for air while being submerged resulting in water entering the respiratory system. They can't move their body in a safe direction but instead they tense up or move uncontrollably and sink as a result.
